The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Hampton sophomore Vendula Strakova has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Nov. 5 through Nov. 11.
A 6-0 right-side hitter from Brno, Czech Republic, Strakova provided the offensive firepower last week, turning in a pair of career bests in leading the Lady Pirates to two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wins.
On Friday versus Delaware State, the sophomore recorded her eighth double-double of the season, drilling 18 kills on .455 hitting to go with 11 digs, three aces and a block in the sweep. But that was just a glimpse of things to come on the offensive side of the net.
Sunday against UMES, Strakova came through with career highs in kills and hitting percentage. The right side hammered 31 kills on .510 hitting as she powered the Lady Pirates to the 3-1 victory. It was Hampton's first victory over UMES since 2005 and snapped the Lady Eagles' 23-match conference winning streak.
On the week, Strakova averaged 7.0 kills per set on .487 hitting, picking up 15 digs, three blocks and five aces. For her efforts, she earned her second-straight MEAC Player of the Week honor and third of the season. Strakova is the first Hampton player to receive the CVU.com weekly honor and also the first player from the MEAC to pick up the award.
At 18-13 overall, the Pirates are having their most successful winning season since 2005. They're heading into this weekend's MEAC tournament sitting 9-3 in league play, tied for the third-best conference record.
In addition to the Player of the Week, CVU.com will be announcing selections for the Top Performers from the past week. These selections will include the Player of the Week and up to 10 others. Choices will consist of players who were finalists for the weekly honor and others who had exceptional individual matches. The additional selections will be based on nominations and CVU.com staff criteria.
Editor's Note: This is the twelfth in a series of Player-of-the-Week selections that will be made through the remainder of the season and announced on Tuesday or Wednesday of each week.
College and conference SIDs are welcome to make Player-of-the-Week nominations. Nominations are due every Monday by 1 p.m. Pacific time.
