The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Marquette senior Holly Mertens has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Oct. 29 through Nov. 4.
A 6-0 right-side hitter from Stanley, Wis., Mertens scorched the opposition for a .543 hitting percentage on the week, helping the Golden Eagles to a trio of victories.
In an early-week road tilt, the senior led the offense in a sweep of UW-Milwaukee, tallying a match-high 12 kills to go with three blocks as she hit .375. And, as the week went on, her hitting numbers only improved.
Back home for Big East play, Mertens first paced the Golden Eagles in a 3-1 victory versus Connecticut, downing 18 kills on .517 hitting as she put back six blocks and added four digs. Then, for the week's finale, the right-side blistered 21 kills on .714 hitting to go with four more blocks as Marquette put away St. John's in four.
For the week, Mertens hit .543 over 11 sets, averaging 4.64 kills and 1.18 blocks per set. That effort earned her a second Big East Conference Player of the Week honor on the season. The senior is the first Golden Eagle to receive the CVU.com weekly honor.
In addition to the Player of the Week, CVU.com will be announcing selections for the Top Performers from the past week. These selections will include the Player of the Week and up to 10 others. Choices will consist of players who were finalists for the weekly honor and others who had exceptional individual matches. The additional selections will be based on nominations and CVU.com staff criteria.
Editor's Note: This is the eleventh in a series of Player-of-the-Week selections that will be made through the remainder of the season and announced on Tuesday or Wednesday of each week.
College and conference SIDs are welcome to make Player-of-the-Week nominations. Nominations are due every Monday by 1 p.m. Pacific time.
