The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Hofstra sophomore Kelsie Wills has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Aug. 27 through Sept. 2.
A 6-1 outside hitter from Matamata, New Zealand, Willis has Hofstra off to an 8-0 start with stellar play on both sides of the net.
After a 4-0 opening weekend, Wills helped the Pride pick up where they left off with a mid-week win over St. Francis (NY). Wills notched 17 kills to go with four digs and six block assists in the sweep.
That was just a tune-up for the Hofstra Invitational, though. The opening match proved to be the toughest, but Wills came through in the 3-2 win over Siena. The sophomore hammered 27 kills, making it a double-double with 15 digs and putting back five more blocks.
Then, in a rematch with St. Francis (NY), the result was similar. Hofstra once again swept, with Wills scorching the Terriers for 22 kills on .426 hitting. She again had a double-double with 10 more digs. Lastly, in the tournament finale, the sophomore again went for 20 kills, tallying 24 on .455 hitting in the 3-1 victory.
For her efforts, Wills was named both tournament MVP and CAA Player of the Week for the second-straight week as she averaged 6.0 kills per set on .364 hitting with 2.2 digs and 0.93 blocks per set.
Wills is the second member of the Pride to earn the CVU.com weekly honor as Shellane Ogoshi was named National Player of the Week in 2006.
In addition to the Player of the Week, CVU.com will be announcing selections for the Top Performers from the past week. These selections will include the Player of the Week and up to 10 others. Choices will consist of players who were finalists for the weekly honor and others who had exceptional individual matches. The additional selections will be based on nominations and CVU.com staff criteria.
Editor's Note: This is the second in a series of Player-of-the-Week selections that will be made through the remainder of the season and announced on Tuesday or Wednesday of each week.
College and conference SIDs are welcome to make Player-of-the-Week nominations. Nominations are due every Monday by 1 p.m. Pacific time.
