Paying our RESPect to Nelson, Shoultz

15-Jan-2010

In an effort to recognize those who work to further the sport of volleyball, especially at the collegiate level, CVU.com is pleased to announce the recipients of the fifth RESPecting Volleyball award.

This season, two university SIDs have been selected for the RESPecting Volleyball (Recognition for Excellence in Supporting and Promoting Volleyball) honor.

CVU is pleased to announce its selections of Tracy Nelson of Army and, for the second consecutive season, Matt Shoultz of Iowa State for the 2009 RESPecting Volleyball award.

Tracy Nelson, Army

In her third season at Army, Tracy Nelson has continued to work hard in promoting the Black Knights — and their on-court performance has given good cause.

For Army it was a banner year as the Black Knights captured the Patriot League title away from American and earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. And as the team excelled, so did Nelson.

Throughout the year Nelson went to the extra effort of providing timely information on Army and also working to promote players through award nominations. Nelson was also exceedingly helpful in providing any requested information and going beyond expectations to make sure materials were available. Additionally, Nelson serves as Director of Internet Services for her department.

"There is no more prepared, hard-working or creative sports information director than Tracy Nelson," said Matt Dougherty, Patriot League media relations director, in an e-mail statement. "From day-to-day work to going the extra mile to promote her teams, Tracy has proven to be one of the best people to work with in the field."

Matt Shoultz, Iowa State

After setting a precedent in 2008, Matt Shoultz — as well as the Iowa State team — didn't spend any time slacking off in 2009.

Again the Cyclones were among the elite teams in the nation, and again Shoultz made every effort to make sure it was known.

"Matt Shoultz is one of the best in the country at what he does," said head volleyball coach Christy Johnson-Lynch in an e-mail statement. "Every year he finds bigger and better ways to cover and promote our sport. We are very fortunate to have an athletics communications director who cares so much about volleyball and about our program."

In his role as assistant director for athletic communications and the contact for volleyball, Shoultz continued to send out weekly releases and notes, but additionally, he made a special effort to send out weekly award nominations and other information of interest.

His efforts culminated in an in-depth nomination package for year-end awards that highlighted player, team and coaching accomplishments.

"Matt puts passion into his work," said Tom Kroeschell, associate athletics director for communications in an e-mail statement. " That means more than accomplishing the fundamental responsibilities of athletics communications. His efforts are extraordinary and recognized by our staff and the Cyclone volleyball coaches and student-athletes."
